Backup Restore Drills That Actually Count

“We have backups” is not a recovery plan. OnesDev MSP treats restore drills as first-class work — timed, owned, and documented — so the night something fails is not the first time you learn the restore path.

Define RTO and RPO in plain language

RPO is how much data you can afford to lose. RTO is how long the business can wait to be usable again. Write both per system (shop DB vs marketing site vs analytics) and pick backup frequency and retention to match — not the default checkbox on a hosting panel.

What a real drill includes

  1. Restore into an isolated environment (not production overwrite)
  2. Verify app boot, login, and a critical business transaction
  3. Record wall-clock time and who did which step
  4. Note gaps: missing secrets, DNS, TLS, or plugin licenses
  5. Fix the gaps, then schedule the next drill

Sales reply vs production SLAs

We aim to reply within 20 minutes. Production incident response times are defined in the MSP agreement and are separate from sales reply time.

Ownership beats tooling

Tools matter less than a named owner and a runbook. Under MSP coverage we keep restore steps short enough that a tired engineer can follow them — and we test that assumption on a cadence, not only after an incident.

Next step

See MSP — managed services or tell us what you must recover first — we will map backups, drills, and SLAs to that order.
